A Persian Rasht Silk on Wool Embroidered Prayer Mat, 19th Century.

Approximately 165 x 100cm

This Persian Rasht textile, made of silk on wool, is a beautifully embroidered piece traditionally used as a prayer mat. The intricate floral patterns and symmetrical design reflect both artistic craftsmanship and the spiritual significance of the mat. The central field, adorned with interlocking diamond shapes enclosing stylized floral medallions, creates a harmonious and focused space for prayer.

The arch-shaped border, a common feature in Persian prayer mats, symbolizes the mihrab (a niche indicating the direction of Mecca) found in mosques, guiding the worshipper during prayer. The vibrant red background, along with the finely detailed embroidery in hues of green, purple, and pink, enhances the aesthetic and symbolic value of the piece, making it not only a functional item for daily worship but also a treasured example of Persian textile artistry.
